ELOPE IN PORTUGAL | GETTING MARRIED IN PORTUGAL

ELOPE IN PORTUGAL &THE PROCESS OF GETTING MARRIED IN PORTUGAL:

Choosing a destination for your wedding or elopement isn’t easy!

But, let us tell you that if you elope in Portugal or decide that getting married in Portugal is the perfect place for you, we agree 100% + we will tell you why!

WHY?

  • Well, you can get a more exclusive experience than many other countries, how cool is that!?

    • You can have your dream luxury elopement or luxury wedding, whereas maybe you couldn’t have it in your homeplace or home country.

  • While other countries have many regulations, laws, and permits to get married in your desired location,

    • Portugal does not. A location, is quite simple to find!

IF YOU ELOPE IN PORTUGAL OR HAVE YOUR DESTINATION WEDDING HERE, YOU CAN LITERALLY DO IT ANYWHERE

  • From the top of a cliff, at a castle or palace, in a forest, near lakes, on a remote beach, at old European cities inside castles, in countryside fields, & also really cool sustainable modern villas or if you just love the old European city of Lisbon… there’s SO many options for you.

But, first… its important to figure out where to begin.

This is where we can help!

We have some helpful info regarding how to elope in Portugal & the process of getting married in Portugal.

LET'S START WITH THE LEGAL STUFF!

LEGALITIES

  • All documentation you provide for your wedding must be original and endorsed with an Apostille stamp. An Apostille Stamp authenticates documents executed outside of Portugal, a birth certificate, for example, so that it can be recognised as genuine.

  • Any documentation that is not in Portuguese must be accompanied by official translations, translated by an agency that's verified by the Portuguese Consulate in your region.

YOU AND YOUR PARTNER WILL NEED

  1. Your passports. The expiry date must be more than six months after your wedding. If one of you lives in Portugal, the resident's card is enough.

  2. Newly-issued, full-length birth certificates for you both, which must show the name of your parents, and be dated within six months of your wedding date.

  3. A divorce decree or death certificate to prove termination of previous marriage or marriages, if this is not your first marriage. These documents must have been issued within the last six months. If you have been divorced from a wedding in the Catholic church and your marriage was not officially annulled, you cannot marry in the Catholic church in Portugal.

  4. Written parental or guardian consent, if you or your partner are under the age of 18.

  5. A fee. This changes from year to year, so it's best to check with the embassy for your region (we've provided links below).

  6. Extra documents required for a Catholic ceremony, if you're having one. We've provided a list below.

  7. Other documents. Above, we've listed the general documents required for getting married in Portugal, but according to your nationality or country of origin, further documentation may be needed.
