Lake Como's elopement venues fall into two groups. Four sit in and around Tremezzina on the western shore: Villa Balbiano, Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Villa del Balbianello, and Villa Carlotta. Two sit near Varenna: Villa Monastero, and Castello di Vezio on the hill above it. Villa Balbiano
Villa Balbiano is the venue where we photographed Darian and Andrew's ceremony, and it suits couples who want a private, garden-and-terrace setting rather than a public landmark. The villa stands in the village of Ossuccio on the western shore, and independent sources date its origins to the late sixteenth century. The ceremony we photographed took place on a lakeside terrace with stone pillars on either side and the water and mountains behind, which gave the couple a clear, uncluttered frame for their vows. Grand Hotel Tremezzo
Grand Hotel Tremezzo works best as the base for an elopement rather than the ceremony site itself, especially for couples who want to get ready in one place and cross the water for the vows. The hotel opened on 10 July 1910 and stands on the western shore in Tremezzina, next to the gardens of Villa Carlotta. Villa del Balbianello
Villa del Balbianello suits couples who want a loggia ceremony above the water, and FAI's own information confirms it accommodates civil or symbolic wedding ceremonies. It occupies the tip of the wooded Dosso d'Avedo peninsula on the western shore of the lake's south-western branch. Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini purchased the property in 1785 and added the loggia that gives two different panoramas of the water, and the Italian heritage foundation FAI has owned it since Count Guido Monzino left it to the foundation in 1988. FAI lists the Loggia Durini as the ceremony space, with a maximum of sixty guests seated.
Villa Monastero
Villa Monastero is the strongest option for a couple who want a very small symbolic ceremony in a garden setting on the eastern shore. The villa stands in Varenna and describes its botanical garden as a ceremony and photo location. Its official booking page for ceremonies of up to thirty people offers three ceremony spaces: the lakeside loggia, a neoclassical temple, and the Sala Polvani. That page lists symbolic ceremonies, so a couple who needs a legally binding civil ceremony should confirm the route with the venue and a local planner before committing to a date.
Villa Carlotta
Villa Carlotta suits couples who want a garden ceremony among historic plantings, and its own event information lists civil weddings as well as wedding ceremonies. The villa in Tremezzo was completed in 1745 by Anton Giorgio Clerici and was renamed in 1847, when Princess Marianna of Prussia gave it to her daughter Charlotte as a wedding gift. The Ente Villa Carlotta foundation now runs the property as a museum, with a botanical garden of about eight hectares. The venue lists a camellia terrace for wedding ceremonies, with views across the water toward Bellagio.
Castello di Vezio
Castello di Vezio is the most informal option on this list, and it works for couples who want an open lawn and a long view rather than a formal interior. The castle sits above Varenna, and the venue describes a landscape that matches the one Alessandro Manzoni wrote about in The Betrothed.
